Quicksand is located in Breathitt County, at the mouth of Quicksand Creek on the North Fork of the Kentucky River. It is about a mile southeast of Jackson.
During the early 20th century, the area was an important lumber producer, with charcoal producers, coal mining and other industries.
It is said, Quicksand got it’s name because of it’s location opposite the mouth of Quicksand Creek.
Quicksand is home to the UK Robinson Center for Appalachian Resource Sustainability (RCARS), which includes Robinson Station, Robinson Forest and the Wood Utilization Center.
