Louisville Water Tower Park is the home of Louisville Water Company’s Pumping Station No. 1 and Water Tower. Built in 1860, these Classical Revival-style facilities include terra cotta and cast iron decorative elements. The site was recently featured in a USA Today article titled “25 must-see buildings in Kentucky” — a list of notable structures selected with help from the American Institute of Architects. The newspaper noted that “although numerous waterworks were built in the United States during the first half of the 19th century, this unique group of buildings is a remarkable survivor.”

The pumping station and water tower were designated a National Historic Landmark in 1971, and they are among only eight of these landmarks in Louisville.

Louisville Water Tower Park is also the home of the WaterWorks Museum, which brings the history of Louisville’s water to life. Located inside the west wing of the original Pumping Station No. 1, the museum highlights Louisville Water’s archive of historic photographs, films and memorabilia, some of which date from the company’s founding.

Visitors to the museum will learn about Louisville Water’s contributions to safe drinking water through its innovations in science and engineering. Special exhibits rotate throughout the year. Admission to the WaterWorks Museum also includes a visit to Louisville Water’s active pump station as well as an up-close view of the Allis Chalmers pump from 1919.

The museum is open Wednesday through Friday from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Hours on Saturday and Sunday are 10 a.m. to 3 p.m.
